MILAN - This week, as millions cast their eyes on the Winter Olympics in Milan, one local, Stacy Gaskill, learned firsthand how difficult the pressure of the Olympic stage could be.
The Golden native and University of Colorado-Boulder student was in the mixed team snowboard cross quarterfinals when she “caught a snow shake” and lost her balance, falling to the ground to end her team’s day and 2026 Olympic goals.
"I got stuck on the inside, and I didn't let it run out, and I knew better. I felt good in training, and I know what I can do on this course, and so to not be able to put down a run, back up (teammate Nathan Pare’s) incredible run, it is really hard,” the two-time Olympian said, fighting back tears. “I wanted to do it for Nate. I wanted to do it for me. I wanted to do it for our whole team. I didn't get that chance and that's something I'll fight with for a while.”
🏂 Snowboard cross involves four athletes going head-to-head down a course with varying terrain, including plenty of jumps, bumps, twists and turns. After a time trial to seed the racers, the medals are determined by a round-by-round elimination process.

The new GOAT of Colorado girls basketball? Riverdale Ridge’s Brihanna Crittendon breaks the all-time scoring record
⛹♀️ ALONE ATOP THE MOUNTAIN — Coming into Riverdale Ridge girls basketball’s matchup against Boulder last week, Ravens star Brihanna Crittendon needed just 56 points to eclipse the legendary Tracy Hill’s all-time record.
Two brilliant performances, against Boulder (31 points in an 84-35 win), and Monarch (26 points in a 76-32 win on Valentine’s Day), Crittendon is the new all-time leading scorer among boys and girls in Colorado high school history at 2,936 points. With two games remaining in the regular season, the University of Texas commit could even get to 3,000.
“I put her on the top (of Colorado girls basketball history),” Riverdale Ridge coach Tim Jones said. “When you think statistically, when she’s done something that nobody else has done, I think with my unbiased opinion, just looking at the statistics, she’s on top. As long as she continues to grow and fight and get better, that’s been a real big thing for us.”
Crittendon accolades:

High school ski teams adapt to Colorado winter’s lack of snow
HIGH SCHOOL SHREDDING — As I’m sure many of you know well, it’s been a less than stellar year for snowboarding and skiing along the Front Range. It’s hard to even convince yourself to leave Denver when you wake up and it’s 60 degrees! This is my second year with an Ikon Pass and I’m doing my best to regret buying it considering this winter’s lack of snow. This made me curious … How has it affected high school teams?
It’s not as bad as you might think: Typically, alpine skiers don’t want powder days like the rest of us. Bluebirds are perfect and racers even want packed-down, icy snow for races and practice.
Manmade snow resorts: Nearly all the locations Colorado high school ski teams use for competitions are resorts that make their own snow. Then a snowcat just packs it down and it’s perfect for racing.
The one exception is Ski Cooper in Leadville, which relies on natural snow. One race was moved from Ski Cooper because there wasn’t enough snow.
Just need to plant the gates: “You know, racers like ice and hard snow, so as long as it’s deep enough to put gates in the ground,” said David Howell, head coach of the Evergreen High School ski team (This was why teams had to pivot from Ski Cooper)
State championships for high school ski teams are at Vail on Feb. 18-19. Howell explained how the resort is scrambling to make sure the venue is ready for state.
“We’re sort of just getting by on the skin of our teeth to get this season finished without any cancelations,” Howell said.
